Mariah Karzai is a third-year Doctor of Pharmacy student at the University of Waterloo. She joined the College for a four-month co-op term over the summer.
How would you describe your experience at the College this summer?
My experience at the College has been truly inspiring. In just a few months, I gained a deep appreciation for the significance of the medication safety program and its impact on patient care and pharmacy practice. This experience has positively shifted my perspective on community pharmacy and instilled a sense of optimism about the potential for meaningful improvements in pharmacies.
My experience was further enriched by the supportive team at the College. My colleagues were consistently friendly and eager to help me learn, which greatly enhanced my overall experience.
What kind of projects did you complete for the College? What was the most interesting project you worked on?
I conducted extensive literature research to better understand safety culture and continuous quality improvement, which are key components of the AIMS Program. The research also provided valuable evidence to support and advocate for further enhancements to the program.
I also had the opportunity to share my insights through assisting with Pharmacy Connection articles and developing learning modules. One of the most interesting projects I had was connecting with community pharmacists to gauge their understanding of the AIMS Program and identify the challenges they face. This feedback will allow us to create targeted resources to support pharmacies and enhance their engagement with the program.
How do you think your experience this summer will help you with your future career in pharmacy?
The knowledge and experience I gained this summer will have a lasting impact on my career in pharmacy and reshape my approach to practice. Regardless of where I work in the future, my understanding of safety culture will enhance my ability to collaborate with others and contribute to a strong, healthy work environment.
I am also grateful for the experience of working in a ‘non-traditional’ role. My experience at the College has provided me with insight into the behind-the-scenes aspects of the pharmacy profession, giving me a greater appreciation for the College’s efforts to maintain patient safety and improve the overall landscape of pharmacy.
